Mugwort is a native wildflower steeped in folklore. For hundreds of years it was made into garlands and hung over doors to deter evil spirits. It was used in place of hops for beer and as a moth and insect repellent. Part of the daisy family, it is covered in small white flowers from August to October. This one was a wildling I came across in the walled garden in September. It stood as a seed head, tall and handsome, against the softer gravel garden planting.

Wild carrot (Daucus carota) plays an important role in Knepp's ecosystem, feeding bees, hoverflies, and beetles while its seedheads, as featured here, draw in finches and other small birds.

Docks (Rumex obtusifolius) - this seed head was the first I collected to study in detail - perhaps one of my favourite colours in nature. Loathed by gardeners for its long, strong tap root that makes it difficult to weed, it’s also one of the quickest plants to ‘mend’ broken ground. Its abundant seeds provide food for all kinds of wildlife, and its leaves are famously used to soothe nettle stings.

Hogweed (Heracleum) can be spotted along the hedgerows and through the rough grassland at Knepp, its umbrella-like clusters of creamy white flowers drawing the eye in summer. By autumn, its intricate seed heads take over creating striking shapes that linger through winter. Unlike its relative, giant hogweed, this species is native and a familiar part of the landscape.
